It's never been easy, but I've got more to be thankful for than to curse from the past year. Things just continue to get better, and next year is already looking like more than just a return to my "normal" goofy ideas, but actually rather promising with many irons in the metaphorical fire....

Thanks to everyone for the support, and those of you that are already asking about boards for the new year. More boards are due to be in the Haut shop as well.

I'm also planning a short return to the UK in April/May, so get in touch if you'd like to get a board made while I'm there. Maximum 10-12 in the timeframe I'll be there.

Onwards, and upwards as always. Some things do improve with age!

Doug Haut has been making boards a long time.

He also loves to fish, and just happens to go to the Bahamas every year to fly fish for Bonefish. This also happens to be the same island were my family is from.

When I 1st moved out to California in 1998, I left all my surfboards behind and figured I'd buy new ones out west. I worked with an older gentleman who used to surf, but hadn't in years. He said I could have his old board, and that it was heavy and beat up from laying in the yard for ages. It was exactly that, a late 60s era board from Doug Haut. I fell in love with the heavy glide, and rode it all the time. Sadly, I ended up losing the board into the rocks a few times, peeling all the cloth off the bottom, pretty much destroying it, and left it in the dumpster at Bolinas. Wonder where that board is now?

Now, I have a shaping room next to Doug, and he brought in a conch shell and loads of pictures to share from his last trip to the islands. Funny little connections...

Working in a glass shop is never short of interesting stuff to look at. Getting to glass, and then sand the boards, gives you a lot of time to get a feel for them, and day dream about the waves they were meant for. These 2 are no exception. Heritage and history in one, all business in the other.

Me, well, I think I'll just call it good enough to say I helped build them.... Go get 'em boys!

It's funny how turmoil can sometimes lead to moments of clarity.

So, yeah, like, here I was, with this bitchin' old Mercedes (which I clearly have an unhealthy obsession with) and buying a van for the business of surfboards. Seemed normal, and all going to plan. But, as luck would have it, the Merc's transmission was feeling its age, and decided to give up the ghost, more or less. No big deal, I just agreed to buy this van, I'll just park the car until I can afford to fix it. Nope, van cuts out, and turns out the ECU is fried. They don't even make replacements anymore, so it has to be sent to the east coast to be reuilt, and that may take 3 weeks - without it being the holiday season.

Huh, bummer...

Oh well, I guess I'll sell the car and break even. Irony is, that to buy and fix the van, or fix the transmission on the Merc, all work out about the same price and same timeframe.

Balls to all that. I'm just getting a bike. No insurance, no license, no pollution.

It’s sunny, warm, and there’s waves. Neither of my modes of transport feel inclined to function today. But, instead of sitting around bitching and moaning about it, I went for a walk, spending the day not surfing. A forced pause, as it were.

The hour long walk down the hill to what the English would call our village, gave time to think about my woes, which are minor in terms of what others deal with daily, and physical exertion is always good for the soul. Although, all the drivers in their massive cars and trucks looked at me like a maniac. Does no one walk in this country?

I’ll be 40 next year, and while that sounds ridiculously old when I hear it in my head, I feel like I’ve only figured life out in the past 10 years. I’ve got less money than at any other time in my life, all but one of my friends are more than a flight away, and am newly single, again. Sounds like a train wreck in modern society’s terms. Maybe that’s why all you people continue to read the nonsense I post on here...

But, I’ve also never felt more convinced that life is meant to be lived, and the world will look after those that listen to their hearts. It’s all rather simple really. Nothing good comes easy, and what comes easy never lasts.

I’m not advocating walking away from a well paying job, leaving your family to become a wandering surf bum like me. That would be highly irresponsible with what life has blessed you with. But, living to work, and being unhappy as a result, is not healthy either.

I know I’ll have to settle down at some point. We all need somewhere to call home. A sanctuary where we feel safe, and can nurture our own dreams. But for now it seems life has more to teach, and I am a willing student.

Adversity can teach you resolve, faith, or defeatism. The choice is yours.

(Standing in the check out line, I was confronted by the usual celebrity garbage fashion magazines, all with articles about sex, and what men want. A Dave Chappelle skit comes to mind, and I laugh to myself. Then, as I'm going about my daily business, I overhear a few conversations of my fellow man, and have to pause to check what century this is. So, let me put the record straight, albeit from a surfer's point of view...)

Every man wants a strong woman, even if they don’t know it. A confident woman that knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to get it. If a man doesn’t want this, he probably isn’t worth knowing.

We want a woman that respects herself. She knows her value, beyond designer labels and fancy cars. She knows those things are only temporal, and never last. She can appreciate a fine meal, wine, clever art, a sharp wit, has read a book or two, and still loves the simple elegance of the sunset.

She commands the room when she enters, yet doesn’t seek attention. This is the essence of her magnetism. Humility is natural, not forced, nor weakness. Her laugh makes you melt, disarming your years of sophistication with one well aimed observation, smiling like she knows she already owns you. You know you are not worthy, but will fight any contenders to the death just to get one last acknowledgement of your existence.

She is the girl all the pretty girls hate. They hate her because she doesn’t try. She possesses a natural confidence. She’s the girl putting gas in her car, wearing jeans and flip flops that no designer can bottle and sell to the masses. You can’t distill her, and fitting in a bottle, yet alone classification, makes simplifying her impossible. At the same time, when she looks you in the eyes, you can see her, unwavering honesty and strength.

There are many women(and men) that attempt to be this person. But, they are only imitations. You can tell them a mile off as soon as you get in their far to clean car, or ask them for a fin key. You can spot them in the parking lot, with their board on their roof, wax up, fins forward, facing down. Wax fresh and clean, in some sort of pattern. The designer underground board pristine, wetsuit dry.

This woman is as elusive as the real men of the world. The men that will stand up when their name is called, are strong in their kindness, defend what they love, and face life head on. They are out there, but increasingly hard to find...

Stand tall, know your worth, and never compromise your beliefs. You’re worth it, even if you don’t know it yet.

Used to have quite a few of these old bikes back in the late 90s before I left California the 1st time. Now that I'm back, I'm getting the bug again, and with fuel prices so high, makes sense to have a commuter.

So, if you've got a running late 60s to 70s standard bike, I'll make you a board with all the bells and whistles in trade. If you want a log, that is basically $1000 dollars worth... let's make a deal!

The surfing world always seems to focus on 2 places, California and Australia. Add Hawaii to that list as well, although it could just be said as the world follows the US. It makes sense in a way since the heart of the surf industry is here, and has been since who knows how long. Same for Australia, with the innovation and hard charging ethos they seem to have in their DNA.

It is unfortunate, however, that because of this much of the rest of the world gets overlooked. Having spent the best part of 10 years living around the world learning my craft, I've met a lot of really inspired people. Brazil has an amazing culture, and some craftsmen that are out of this world. Europe as a whole is choc full of history, culture, and free thinking characters. I'd run out of space if I tried to name all of them.

All this is leading up to giving a shout to 2 guys doing their thing, completely their own way (with no corporate support mind you) on a totally real trip. They live life fully, with no compromise. And, that my dear reader is what life is for!

Daniel Crockett has been publishing the Kook surfpaper for little bit now, writes poetry and doodles and and stuff. Plus, has to be one of the most humble yet gifted guys I've met. Both in and out of the water.

John Eldridge is a wonder in his own right. I really don't know how he gets away with it, but he always seems to be taking off on some crazed adventure in his ex MOD Mercedes van he turned into mobile comfort zone. He's always out there, charging like, really huge waves, or able to flow small waves on heavy logs. He has this casual eye for documenting it along the way, and it always has an honest feel to it. Maybe that's because he's one of the few people I've met that really doesn't care about "fitting." Maybe that because he's getting the waves while we all talk about it.

Be sure to check these guys out. There's a whole wide (surfing) world out there with it's own voice and it deserves as much attention as anywhere.

There's a lot of buzz about the incut fish I've been making, especially over here in the US. Seems rather timely that I got a nice email from Joe in Wales regarding this 5'8" twin keel I made for him about a year ago:

5th annual European Fish Fry was one to remember!

Got off to a rainy and blustery start, but the stoke was through the roof, If anyone has pictures, please send them over as I didn't get a chance to take any myself.

Thanks to everyone that made their way down, brought boards, art, Mr Natty for the barber service, and everyone that just turned up and shared some good times. The Coombe Barton Inn, and Lee and Chrissy for an amazing service at the Mojito Bar - the Dirty Mermaid. I'm sure I'm going to forget someone as I'm still recovering from the day and nights festivities, and will attempt to do a full report later on.

Also, I'd like to thank Rich from Friend of Mine for organizing the art and music. R.W Hodges, Stringer Bessant, and a very special guest appearance from Thom Yorke were simply icing on an already delicious cake.

However, there is no record of any life, anywhere on earth, for half of that time. Half the record of our planet, since land and sea were 1st distinguishable on Earth, there are no traces of life. Whoa... and here I was moaning about losing my flights, and some time at home with my folks before going to California...

Our lives are incredibly short, thank God we have surfing to teach us to slow down and enjoy it.
